Boston University Tanglewood Institute

Summer 2010 Season

Boston, MA – The Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) launches its 45th season with another summer full of talented students, exciting concerts, and renowned guest artists. A program of the Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Music, BUTI enrolls a select group of gifted high school musicians each summer to the Tanglewood grounds for its training programs for orchestra, voice, wind ensemble, piano, composition, and harp, as well as workshops for individual instruments and chamber ensembles. Led by Director Phyllis Hoffman, BUTI is considered one of the most prestigious summer music programs for high school students in the United States. With auditions held in eight cities this year, 811 students applied and auditioned for 338 seats in the program, representing 38 states  and 11 foreign countries, including Korea, China, Israel, Germany, Chile, Mexico, and Singapore.

BUTI students and faculty continue to participate in outreach both on the Tanglewood campus and in the Lenox community: select members of the Young Artists Orchestra will perform chamber music on the afternoon of August 3 as part of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s annual day-long music celebration Tanglewood on Parade; the Young Artists Chorus will perform on August 14 as part of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s annual Film Night; faculty members and visiting artists will perform a series of recitals at Trinity Church in downtown Lenox; and several BUTI chamber ensembles will be guest performers at the Lenox Library’s Children’s Hour, Kimball Farms Nursing Home, and Lilac Park.

The BUTI Young Artists Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Chorus will perform a series of concerts in Ozawa Hall and the Tanglewood Theatre on the Tanglewood Main Grounds. Concerts begin July 16 and run through August 14 at these prestigious venues. In honor of the tenth anniversary of the BUTI Young Artists Wind Ensemble (YAWE), the ensemble will perform BUTI-commissioned world premieres by Michael Gandolfi and Jonathan Newman, and will be joined by guest artists Terry Everson, trumpet; Ken Radnofsky, saxophone; and Frank Battisti, founding conductor of the YAWE.
