City Council Approves Fenway Cultural District Proposal

Boston, MA –   On Wednesday, December 14th 2011, Boston City Council members unanimously approved a resolution in support of a state recognized Fenway Cultural District to be managed by The Fenway Alliance.
The Council vote on the resolution followed a City Council Public Hearing discussing its merits on Monday, December 14th at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
The Council Resolution is a required step in the application process set forth under the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s (MCC) new Cultural District Initiative, establishing worthy Cultural Districts across the Commonwealth.
The Fenway Alliance, established in 1977, is a consortium of 21 academic and cultural institutions in the Fenway.  The MCC will review the Alliance’s proposal establishing the Fenway neighborhood as a state-recognized cultural district at its upcoming board meeting in February.
Through this designation, the Fenway Alliance seeks to promote a cultual environment that merges the Fenway’s rich historic cultural resources with its many contemporary elements into a more well-known, welcoming and creative experience for residents, students, and national and international visitors.
The MCC designation will assist in enhancing the area’s creative economy which already contributes significantly to the economy of Boston and the Commonwealth.
To carry out this vision, the Fenway Alliance has created an 80-member Fenway Cultual District Committee representing area residents, government entities, cultural institutions, businesses and community-based organizations.
The Fenway Cultural District Committee Goals

1) Create a highly respected “brand” through enhanced marketing and promotion of the Fenway as a premier cultural destination for citizens of the Commonwealth, and national and international visitors.
2) Continue to provide to the public the largest day of free cultural experiences in Greater Boston – Opening Our Doors; to create additional cultural programing during evenings and spring/summer seasons; and to promote the myriad cultural and intellectual offerings of the Fenway academic institutions.
3) Create an easily navigable area for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists with aesthetically appropriate way finding and signage.
4) Encourage involvement of local businesses to create a more vibrant urban space by working in collaboration with the Fenway Cultural District Committee for 1. street-scaping 2. cultural programming and 3. public art.
5) Continue work on rehabilitating, preserving and enhancing the historic Olmsted Muddy River park, and to better promote and link the Olmsted Park to other built amenities and cultural activities.
6) Provide opportunities for artists and others in the creative sector to promote their work and products.
